The author takes us through forty different themes which can be applied to all sorts of surfaces -- stripes, flower and fruit motifs, polka dots, or African-inspired designs for example -- each organized according to color harmonies or contrasts. For the floor terracotta colors can be applied to ceramic tiles, polka dot or stripy designs go well with crockery, for pillow cases and bed linen floral and vegetable designs are suitable. Other ideas include mosaics for tableware, trompe-I'ceil designs for storage boxes and stencilled friezes for the kitchen.

For each project watercolor drawings give inspiration for the choice of colors, the text lists the materials necessary and each stage of production, and finally the resulting product is shown.
