Introduction -- The Arab period -- The Muslim world -- Crusaders and Muslims -- The further spread of Islam -- The Ottoman world -- The twentieth century.
The Historical Atlas of the Middle East is for the general reader, and has 113 maps with commentaries covering the whole period from earliest historical times until 1993. 'Middle East' is a word on everyone's lips, but not an easy one to define. An American admiral, Alfred Thayer Mahan, coined it in 1902. He used it as a convenient shorthand expression for the area between India and Arabia, centering on the Persian Gulf.
