This program showcases over 600 of Smith's photographs from the war in the South Pacific to victims of industrial pollution in a Japanese village dealing with the themes of social responsibility and common humanity. A dramatic recreation of the artist by actor Peter Riegert is taken from his diaries and letters. Interwoven through the program are archival footage and interviews with family and friends.
