A profile of W. Eugene Smith as told through his photographs, interviews and dramatized sequences. This program showcases over 600 of Smith's photographs from the war in the South Pacific to victims of industrial pollution in a Japanese village dealing with the themes of social responsibility and common humanity. A dramatic recreation of the artist by actor Peter Riegert is taken from his diaries and letters. Interwoven through the program are archival footage and interviews with family and friends.
