"Published to coincide with the exhibition ... at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 9 October 1997-29 March 1998 ..."--T.p. verso.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 140-141) and index.
This is a fascinating historical overview of textiles in Pakistan from the earliest evidence (at Mehrgarh in Baluchistan, c. 5000 B.C.), through the Indus Valley period (c. 2000 B.C.), to sculptural and textual evidence from the early centuries A.D. Influences reflect early invasions from Central Asia and the Islamic world and, in the 16th century, the foundation of the Mughal Empire. Lahore in particular was a great center of Mughal culture, and the types of textiles and carpets that were made there and the influence of Mughal art on textile design as a whole are discussed.
This is the first comprehensive survey of Pakistani textiles and this book, lavishly illustrated with over 250 color images, is the definitive reference work on the subject.
