On October 29th, 1873, John Mackay (Mack Williams) and James Fair (Paul Birch) discover silver in the Comstock mine. On November 7, 1871, the New York Times editor, Louis J. Jennings (Herbert Rudley), Sheriff James O'Brien (Roy Engel) and cartoonist Thomas Nast (Edgar Barrrier) successfully fight political corruption, bribery and intimidation by William Tweed (Paul Maxey). Through the elections, the people of New York City elect them out of office.
