This thesis examines the concentration ratio in the banking sector in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The objective is to investigate the relationship between the concentration ratio and the financial sector development. The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, HHI, was used to analyze UAE banking sector data by the Emirates Banks Association for the period of 1997-2001. The main implications of this finding are its effect on: the financial sector development, mergers and consolidations and the stability of the financial system.
